Constructing Exterior Walls to Avoid Moisture Intrusion

Course #: BESAVB101-HNRY

1 AIA LU/HSW
1 IIBEC CEH

Learn how to properly design and construct an exterior wall assembly by focusing on preventing moisture accumulation in cavity wall construction.

Learning Objectives:

  • Emphasis on industry standards for creating a long-term functional wall assembly while capturing energy savings for building owners due to using an air barrier to create an air and watertight building envelope. 1.) Identify paths of uncontrolled air leakage 2.) Ensure a wall assembly can dry out 3.) Verify if a building requires a vapor barrier. 4.) Understanding industry standards for product installation to avoid water penetration.
  • Understanding local and international building code requirements for air and/or vapor barriers. Review case studies and building tests that verify the energy-saving benefit of air barriers and proper installation of exterior wall assemblies.
  • Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of building science principles that guide the proper selection, detailing, and application of air barriers in the building envelope.
  • Review ASTM methods of identifying an industry-standard air barrier assembly, including ASTM E2112, ASTM E96, ASTM E2178, and ASTM E2357
