The Challenge

Located just north of Tampa on Florida’s Gulf Coast, the Hernando County School District needed a lasting solution for two aging roofs at Hernando High School. Both modified bitumen roofs were beginning to wear and leak.

The district was considering a TPO membrane, which it had used for previous roof repairs. TPO was an affordable option, but not necessarily the best long-term solution. As the district had learned, TPO membranes are susceptible to UV damage from the sun – problems along seams and around penetrations can appear in just five years. Fortunately, Henry proposed an alternative that the district wasn’t aware of – the Pro-Grade® 100% Silicone System.

The Solution

Unlike TPO membranes, the Pro-Grade® 100% Silicone System is a seamless, self-flashing liquid-applied roofing solution. It’s also impervious to damaging UV rays and permanent ponding water. As Joe Mignoli, Sr., of the project’s contractor Protech Roofing Services notes, “The Henry Pro-Grade® 988 100% Silicone Roof Coating Restoration System offered the district several benefits vs. TPO. Plus, we knew it would simplify installation for us – the Pro-Grade® 100% Silicone System can go on in a single coat and is rain-safe in 15 minutes”. School administrators were convinced and opted to install the Pro-Grade® 100% Silicone System on one of the two high school building roofs.

The Results

Installation went smoothly, with no disruptions to school activities. Administrators had Protech install the Pro-Grade® 100% Silicone System on the second high school roof, soon followed by a third. Plans are underway for a fourth installation on a TPO-covered roof at the county’s middle school. The district chose a 15-year warranty on the installations. With proper maintenance, the systems could all be renewed after the first 15 years with a recoat to get another 15 years of cost-effective protection.
