The Challenge

When architect John Pittman and company started designing a new family estate home for a rugged section of Hilton Head Island, they knew they would need a superior weatherization system. The home would be surrounded on three sides by water – salt marsh, river and sea – and face constant exposure to damp, salty air and high winds, plus periodic heavy rains and even hurricanes.

The Solution

Having used Henry® Blueskin® VP100 successfully on previous beachfront residences, Pittman’s team looked to Henry for a complete Blueskin building envelope solution. “We designed this home to be symbiotic with the environment around it,” Pittman explains, “as well as energy-efficient and fully protected from moisture damage.”

To ensure that protection, the team specified both Blueskin RF200 Ice and Water Shield and Blueskin RF200 Tile and Metal for the intricate slate and metal roof. They relied on Blueskin VP100 for the walls and installed Air-Bloc® LF liquid flashing around the windows. To ensure a proper gap behind the exterior stucco application, they used WeatherSmart® Rainscreen.

The Results

As the latest addition to Bluffton’s private Belfair community, the new estate home is built to weather extreme coastal conditions for years to come. The home also passed blower door test requirements with ease, ensuring long-term energy efficiency. As Pittman summarizes, “Our client wanted a 100-year house and we know this weatherization system will make that a reality.”
