The Challenge

The University of Texas Arlington wanted to provide students with more luxurious dormitory lifestyle options, but wanted to do so in an affordable way. A new dormitory scheduled for construction called for a high-priced weather resistive barrier system. But Roy Barnett, Superintendent for Links Construction, knew the goal was to find products that had high performance and contributed to the higher end lifestyle, but at a good value.

The Solution

Before construction of the dormitory began, Barnett convinced the architect to switch to a Henry® weather-resistive barrier system consisting of WeatherSmart® Commercial, FortiFlash® Flashing Membrane and Moistop® Sealant. WeatherSmart Commercial offered increased UV exposure and a more preferred perm rating compared to the originally specified weather-resistive barrier. This lower perm rating was better suited to the cooling system being used. Additionally, the components of the Henry weather resistive barrier system allowed the wall assembly to pass per NFPA 285.

By installing the complete system, Barnett was able to receive an industry-leading 15-year warranty providing material PLUS labor for warranted repairs.

The Results

Today, the 264-unit dormitory on 4.5 acres of the University of Texas Arlington campus is evidence of an effective building envelope system that is providing students with a healthy learning and living environment. Backed by Henry Company, Roy Barnett and the crew at Links Construction can move onto the next project with confidence knowing they have a one-stop source to turn to for an effective weather-resistive barrier system – no matter the application scenario.
