Henry® 790-11 Hot Rubberized Asphalt Waterproofing Membrane is keeping Mount Rushmore’s Visitor Center dry

The Situation

The Mount Rushmore Visitor Center features a large plaza deck constructed of multiple-joint concrete flooring panels and limestone pavers. The National Park Service received approval to restore the plaza deck area that sits above occupied space – a space that holds a museum, a gift shop and other national treasures. Henry was selected to provide its waterproofing system solution to the national monument, helping to protect the structure and provide long-term durability.

The Solution

As a tried-and-true component of the Henry waterproofing portfolio, Henry 790-11 Hot Rubberized Asphalt Waterproofing System was selected as the ideal solution for the project. The consultant working on the Mount Rushmore restoration had a positive track record with the Henry product and was confident of an excellent outcome. After existing drainage considerations and subsequent enhancements, restoration of the plaza began, using the Henry 790-11 Hot Rubberized Asphalt Waterproofing Membrane, a special blend of asphalts, synthetic rubber and mineral stabilizers. After installation of the waterproofing membrane, additional drain penetrations were installed and flashed with Henry Pumadeq Flex 31MV flashing membrane. Together, the Henry 790-11 and Pumadeq Flex 31MV provides a monolithic waterproofing membrane and superior adhesion even in single-digit weather.

The Results

Because the Henry 790-11 Hot Rubberized Asphalt Waterproofing Membrane retains its flexibility and maximum adhesion even in low temperatures, crews were able to work through the winter months on the plaza deck restoration project. The full adhesion to the deck surface restricts lateral water movement, providing confidence that the Mount Rushmore Visitors Center is protected with a durable, long-lasting waterproofing system for years to come. With completion of the waterproofing system, the subsequent addition of limestone pavers will complete the plaza deck and begin to welcome new visitors.
